We drive on the left-hand side of the road. Our speed limit ranges from 60 km. (urban) to 120 km. (freeway) per hour, depending on the road. Wearing of seat belts is compulsory, and driving under the influence of alcohol is a serious offence. An international driver's license is required to rent cars.
When planning a self-drive adventure
through Africa, plan thoroughly and book your vehicle far in advance. Most car
hire companies don't allow their vehicles into some African countries, and car
insurance excesses vary depending on the countries you are travelling through.
Safari Safety
Beware of Wild Animals - When visiting game parks always be aware that animals
are kept in there in their natural 'wild' conditions. Do not alight from your
car unless in areas marked as safe to do so; do not get yourself out of the
window of your car to take a close-up photograph; and when near big game (rhinos,
elephants, buffaloes) keep your car in first gear and ready to go in case of
unexpected charge.
